The Gallipoli Exhibition- a moving tribute to the Welsh who died
The exhibition has panels explaining the events of the campaign which is said by many to be one of the darkest periods of the Great War, at which thousands of Welsh men lost their lives.
The stories are told from a very personal viewpoint. I was particulalrly moved by the story of the "Quarry Boys" from Penmaenmawr, who joined up as a group and served together. I was also horrified to hear about the "Great Storm" a weather event of torrential rain followed by freezing temperatures that claimed the lives of so many soldiers.
My overwhelming impression was of the tragedy of so many lives lost in a campaign where it seemed as if the leaders didn't really know what they were doing and that overall accomplished so little.
Newtown Local History Group have collected additional information about Newtonians caught up in the bitter conflict, many never to return.
